Director : Raymond Menmuir Cast : Keith Barron, Derek Newark, Tenniel Evans TX : 17th October 1964 Notes : Australian born scriptwriter William Emms had also written the Hartnell era Dr Who adventure Galaxy Four. Other work of note includes an adaptation of Hilary Waugh's novel Prisoner's Plea for the Verity Lambert produced anthology sleuth series Detective in 1969. He also contributed scripts to Ace of Wands, R3, Callan and Mr Rose. He died in 1993. Tenniel Evans was a lifelong friend of the actor Jon Pertwee and starred alongside him in the long running radio sitcom The Navy Lark. He also appeared in the Jon Pertwee era Doctor Who story Carnival of Monsters. A veteran of five decades in the acting business Evans has also appeared in many classic and cult TV shows. Amongst them are roles in The Avengers, Out of the Unknown (Sucker Bait and The Prophet), Undermind, The Saint, Mr Rose, Budgie, Knights of God and Dalziel and Pascoe. Derek Newark was another veteran of Doctor Who having appeared in the very first adventure as a caveman and later in the Pertwee era as Greg Sutton in the classic Inferno. Before his death in 1998 Newark notched up many appearances on the small screen including Out Of This World, The Avengers, The Baron, Man In A Suitcase, Callan, The Saint, Jason King, The Persuaders!, Barlow At Large and Reilly Ace of Spies. Keith Baron makes the first of two appearances in the series.
Director : Raymond Menmuir Cast : Glynn Edwards, Peter Copley, Michael Robbins TX : 24th October 1964 Notes : Guest starring in this episode as Private Pentlebury was actor Micheal Robbins who found fame with his role as Arthur in the 70's sitcom On The Buses. Regarded as a comic actor Robbins actually had many serious character acting credits under his belt. Born in 1930 Robbins became a regular face on our screens in the early sixties appearing in such shows as The Avengers (Square Root of Evil, Dragonsfield, Mr Teddy Bear and Take Me To Your Leader), Ghost Squad, Callan, Department S and The Sweeney. In later life he suffered periods of ill health which led to some time out of work but his appearance as Richard Mace in the Peter Davison Doctor Who adventure The Visitation in 1982 was part of a resurgence of work in the eighties. During this decade he was extremely busy clocking up roles in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Fairly Secret Army, The Bounder and Eastenders. Comedy wise Robbins appeared in other shows such as The Good Life, George and Mildred, Till Death Do Us Part and Man About The House. Also a familiar face on the big screen you can spot him in Victor/Victoria (1982), The Great Muppet Caper (1981), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), Villian (1971) and Zeppelin (1971) amongst others. His final role was in an episode of The New Statesman in 1991. He died on the 11th of December 1992. Born in 1931, in Malaya, Glynn Edwards has always been in demand for his gruff and tough image. Amongst his many roles are appearances in The Sentimental Agent, Undermind, R3, The Baron, Out of the Unknown, The Avengers, The Persuaders!, The Professionals and Minder. Peter Copley has an extensive career stretching back to the 1930's. Born in 1915 Copley is still going strong in a career which has seen him hardly of our screens. Highlights include roles in Dimensions In Fear, The Avengers, Out Of The Unknown, Doomwatch, Arthur of The Britons, Survivors, Sky, Into The Labyrinth, Cadfael and most recently Strange.
Director : Peter Graham Scott Cast : Leonard Rossiter, Mike Pratt, Ian McShane TX : 31st October 1964 Notes : Leonard Rossitter (famous as both Reggie Perrin and Rigsby) made an appearance in this episode. He would later appear in the Nigel Kneale scripted BBC play The Year of the Sex Olympics. Born in 1923 director Peter Graham Scott began his career as a film editor and worked in this capacity on the classic early Brit gangster flick Brighton Rock (1947). His directorial work for television includes episodes of Danger Man, The Avengers and The Prisoner (The General). His work for HTV producing and directing resulted in the classic series The Children of the Stones and Into The Labyrinth. From the 80's onwards he concentrated on producing and was responsible for adaptations of Jamaica Inn (1985) which starred Patrick McGoohan and The Canterville Ghost (1986). Mike Pratt (1931 - 1976) was the original Jeff Randall in the 1960's version of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). This role dominated a career which saw performances in such diverse shows as Danger Man, Out Of The Unknown (Time In Advance), The Man In Room 17, Gideon's Way, R3, The Saint, The Baron, UFO, Spyder's Web, Callan, Arthur of the Britons and Hunter's Walk. Pratt was also a talented songwriter. Lovejoy himself, Ian McShane, can be seen in one of his first TV roles in this episode.
Director : Raymond Menhuir Cast : Gary Bond, John Colin, Diana Coupland TX : 7th November 1964 Notes : Producer of the series, John Bryce, had come fresh from a similar position on the second and third season of The Avengers. He would later return to the programme on a short basis as producer for the start of the Tara King era of the show. After working on Redcap he was assigned to oversee the production of Public Eye. Gary Bond (1940 - 1995) also appeared in The Avengers (Stay Tuned) and Hammer House of Horror (Growing Pains). Actress Diana Coupland is probably best known for her role opposite Sid James in the sitcom Bless This House.

His film scripts include The Italian Job, Kelly's Heroes and Sweeney II. He was the creator and writer of probably the 80's best slice of British telefantasy Edge Of Darkness and also created Z Cars for producer David E Rose in 1962. Ian McNaughton also appeared in The Avengers episode The Master Minds. Warren Mitchell is forever etched into the public psyche as Alf Garnett star of the sitcoms Till Death Do Us Part and In Sickness And In Health. He was most recently seen as Barquentine in the BBC production of Gormenghast. Windsor Davies also starred in Gormenghast as Rottcodd. Further cult TV credits include Doctor Who (Evil of the Daleks), Adam Adamant Lives! (Death Begins At Seventy), UFO, The Guardians and Callan.
Director : Bill Bain Cast : Ronald Leigh-Hunt, Barry Keegan, Colin Rix TX : 21st November 1964 Notes : Writer Julian Bond has also been responsible for the scripts for episodes of Out Of The Unknown, The Saint and Upstairs Downstairs. He wrote the 1978 series The Love of Lydia which starred a young Peter Davison as well as the feature films The Shooting Party (1984) and The Whistle Blower (1986). In 1979 he was also co-writer on the Southern TV revival of Dick Barton - Special Agent and also adapted the M M Kaye novel The Far Pavilions for production by Channel Four in 1984. Ronald Leigh-Hunt starred as Col. Buchan in The Freewheelers as well as cropping up many ITC adventure series. Barry Keegan (1922 - 1977) had also appeared in Crane, The Avengers and The Saint. Colin Rix was often seen as an officer of the law in such series as New Scotland Yard, Upstairs Downstairs and The Professionals.
Director : Bill Bain Cast : Hywel Bennett, Joseph O'Connor, Allan Cuthbertson TX : 28th November 1964 Notes : A fresh faced Hywel Bennett has a guest role in this episode. Bennett was born in Wales on 8th April 1944 and made his London stage debut in 1959 playing the female role of Ophelia in Hamlet. He established a name for his self throughout the sixties in a string of TV and film appearances and made his cinema debut in 1966's The Family Way playing the impotent husband of Hayley Mills. This was followed by a role in the Dennis Potter BBC play Where the Buffalo Roams (1967) as Willy Turner. Further film roles include Twisted Nerve (1968), The Virgin Soldiers (1969), Loot (1970) and Percy - as the recipient of the world's first penis transplant (1971). His prolific TV appearances include The Sweeney, Pennies From Heaven, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the long running sitcom Shelley and more recently Virtual Murder (A Bone To Pick), Neverwhere, Karaoke and the updated version of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) in 2001. Joseph O'Connor (sometime credited as Joseph O'Conor) also appeared in R3, Mystery and Imagination and Out Of The Unknown. One of his final roles before his death in January 2001 was in Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years. Australian born actor Allan Cuthbertson made the first of two appearances in the series in this episode. His other noteworthy credits include The Avengers, Mr Rose, The Saint, The Goodies, Jason King and Edge of Darkness.
Director : Raymond Menmuir Cast : Richard O'Sullivan, Barry Evans, Bryan Mosley TX : 5th December 1964 Notes : The late Barry Evans (1943 - 1997) was cast in this episode as Tug Wilson. Evans would forever be associated with his roles in the sitcoms Doctor in the House, Doctor at Large and Mind Your Language before his death in 1997 due to receiving a blow to is head during a robbery attempt. Filmwise Evans appeared in Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush (1968), Die Screaming Marianne (1971) and Adventures of Taxi Driver (1976). He retired from acting at the end of the 70's and was earning a living as a taxi driver during the time of his death. Richard O'Sullivan's star shone brightly in the 70's with appearances in the sitcoms Doctor In Charge, Man About The House and Robins Nest. Too many he is also the face of Dick Turpin, from the succesful ITV series that began in 1979. O'Sullivan quit acting in the mid 90's. Bryan Mosley was the face of Alf Roberts in Coronation Street and was also famously thrown from the top of Gateshead multi-storey carpark by Michael Caine in the film Get Carter. he also cropped up in Out Of The Unknown, Doctor Who and The Avengers.
Director : Raymond Menmuir Cast : Walter Gotell, Colin Blakely, Carl Duering TX : 12th December 1964 Notes : Writer Leon Griffiths was the creator of Minder and had fashioned scripts for Out Of The Unknown (Some Lapse of Time, The Yellow Pill) and Return of the Saint. He died in 1992. This episode featured the actor Walter Gotell who was famed for his recurring role as General Gogol in the James Bond films. He also appeared in The Andromeda Breakthrough. Colin Blakely (1930 -1987) also made appearances in Man In A Suitcase, The Avengers and The Champions. Carl Duering has made a career from playing Germans or Eastern Europeans for over 40 years, with appearances in The Avengers, The Sweeney, Boon and Smiley's People.
Director : Guy Verney Cast : Bryan Marshall, Richard Coleman, Michael Gaunt TX : 19th December 1964 Notes : Micheal Ashe would also script for the anthology show Out Of The Unknown (The Fosters). Actor Bryan Marshall was in the popular football based soap opera United! as team captain Jerry Birkett and also took regular roles in the series The Forsyte Saga and Warship. His guest roles include R3, The Avengers, The Professionals and Robin Of Sherwood. He can also been seen as Captain Potter in the Hammer film version of Quatermass and the Pit. Richard Coleman also appeared in Plateau Of Fear, Secret Beneath The Sea, Dimensions of Fear and Virtual Murder.
Director : Jonathan Alwyn Cast : Ewan Solon, Gary Watson, John Aberini TX : 2nd January 1965 Notes : Jeremy Paul also wrote for Out Of The Unknown (The Dead Past, The Last Lonely Man) as well as Upstairs Downstairs, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and most recently in 2001 Midsomer Murders. In 1980 he returned to the sci fi genre with the play The Flipside of Dominick Hide and its sequel in 1982 Another Flip For Dominick Hide co-written with Alan Gibson. New Zealand born actor Ewan Solon (1918-1985) had film roles stretching back to the 40's. Amongst his TV credits of note are Danger Man, Man of the World, Doctor Who (The Savages and Planet of Evil), Into the Labyrinth, Kidnapped and The Dombolt Chase. Gary Watson also had roles in The Avengers (Lobster Quadrille), The Baron, Thriller, The Hanged Man and Shoestring. In 1966 he starred as Aramis in the BBC production of The Three Muskateers.
Director : Lawrence Bourne Cast : Philip Bond, John Colin, Barbara Jefford TX : 9th January 1965 Notes : Philip Bond was cast as Captain Pelly in this episode and will be familiar to Dr Who fans as Ganatus the Thal in the first ever Daleks adventure broadcast in 1963. His daughter, Samantha Bond, has portrayed Miss Moneypenny in all the Bond films from Goldeneye onwards.
Director : Guy Verney Cast : Ewan Hooper, David Burke, Robin Bailey, Graham Crowden TX : 16th January 1965 Notes : Graham Crowden has carved a career as lunatics and eccentrics. He camped it up in episodes of Star Maidens and Dr Who (The Horns Of Nimmon), played tragicomedy in A Very Peculiar Practice and has appeared in so many films there's no room to mention even his more notable roles. His best remembered role to many is in the sitcom Waiting For God. Born in 1922 Crowden is sill working and recent credits include The Tenth Kingdom as an OAP elf and an episode of the horror spoof series Dr Terrors House of Horrible. As well as being a director Guy Verney was also an actor and producer. As a director he oversaw the production of episodes for such shows as Police Surgeon, The Avengers, Out Of This World, Callan and The Mind Of J G Reeder. Ewan Hooper also cropped up in episodes of Man In A Suitcase and The Avengers. David Burke is perhaps best known as Dr Watson opposite Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes. He also appeared in The Guardians and Armchair Thriller.
Director : Guy Verney Cast : Barry Letts, Richard Owens, Michael Wynne, Brian Cox TX : 2nd April 1966 Notes : Cast for the episode includes Barry Letts who was the producer of the Pertwee era of Dr Who, Moonbase Three and also many classic Sunday serials during the eighties including versions of The Invisible Man and The Hound of the Baskervilles. Acting wise Letts appeared in of City Beneath the Sea. Brian Cox also featured in this episode and was born in Scotland in 1946. His TV roles include Doomwatch (Hear No Evil), Target (Carve Up), Hammer House Of Horror (The Silent Scream) and most recently Longitude (2000). At ease playing comedy (with appearances in Red Dwarf and Sean's Show) or Shakespeare he has the distinguished credit of being the first actor to portray Dr Hannibal Lecter in the film Manhunter. Richard Owens was also cast in episodes of The Avengers, Upstairs Downstairs and Rumpole of the Bailey.
Director : Quentin Laurence Cast : Neil Hallett, George Sewell, Philip Locke TX : 9th April 1966 Notes : Guests for this episode included George Sewell and Philip Locke. Sewell was born in London in 1924 and served with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. He became an actor aged 35 and has starred in episodes of Z Cars, The Sweeney, Public Eye, Paul Temple, Man In A Suitcase, Dr Who and Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense. His most famous TV roles where Alec Freeman in UFO and Detective Chief Inspector Alan Craven in Special Branch. RADA graduate Locke was born in 1928. With screen credits stretching back to 1952 Locke now concentrates on theatre work. Neil Hallett has guest starred in many film adventures series including The Buccaneers, The Avengers, Ghost Squad, Counterstrike, Department S, UFO, The Persuaders!, The Sweeney and The Professionals.
Director : Guy Verney Cast : Garfield Morgan, Ian Cullen, Peter Williams TX : 16th April 1966 Notes : Garfield Morgan plays Sergeant O'Keefe in this episode. To many fans he will always be Haskins in The Sweeney (alongside John Thaw), but he has also clocked up appearances in may cult shows other the years including Out Of This World, Ghost Squad, Undermind, R3, The Avengers, Callan, Department S and Minder. Following ill health in the early part of the 90's Morgan is now semi retired but still makes occasional appearances - his most recent being the film The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain (1995). Ian Cullen also appeared in the Doctor Who story The Aztecs, Department S and Blake's 7. He was the regular character D.C. Joe Skinner in Z Cars for six years.

Bowles was born in 1936 and made his TV debut in the 1959 BBC series The Last Chronicle of Barsett. During the 60's and 70's Bowles became a popular screen villian and appeared in a string of ITC productions including Danger Man, Department S, The Protectors and The Persuaders!. Other notable genre appearances include episodes of The Avengers, Adam Adamant Lives! and Out Of The Unknown. In recent years Bowles has been seen guesting in episodes of Jonathan Creek and Randall And Hopkirk (Deceased) as revived by Charlie Higson, Reeves and Mortimer. William Lucas was Dr James Gordon in The Adventures of Black Beauty and also appeared in Doctor Who (Frontios), The Invisible Man, Out Of This World, The Avengers, Doomwatch, Out Of The Unknown, The Hanged Man and the ill fated soap opera Eldorado as Stanley Webb. Patrick Bedford also appeared in the Counterstrike episode Out Of Mind.
Director : Quentin Laurence Cast : Edward Fox, Philip Madoc, Terence Longdon TX : 30th April 1966 Notes : Edward Fox also appeared in The Mind Of J G Reeder and The Avengers episode My Wildest Dream. More recently he can be seen in ITV crime drama Foyle's War. Welsh actor has specialised in untrustworthy or sleazey characters. Apart from several appearances in The Avengers and Doctor Who he has also guested in episodes of Out Of This World, R3, the original Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), The Champions, Manhunt, Target, Space 1999, The Goodies, The Sweeney and First Born. He also achieved comedy fame as the U-boat commander in a certain Dad's Army episode (Don't tell him Pike!). He is currently to be seen in the Channel Five crime drama A Mind To Kill as DCI Noel Bain.

Windsor Davies was actually born in London, but to Welsh parents. His later career has seen him carve a niche in sitcoms - most notably It Aint Half Hot Mum and Never The Twain - but he also has credits in may cult TV programmes such as Adam Adamant Lives! (Death Begins at Seventy), UFO, The Guardians, Callan, Terrahawks and Gormenghast. Alan Lake (1940 - 1984) was once married to Diana Dors. His credits include Department S, The Adventurer, The Sweeney, Doctor Who (Underworld) and Blake's 7 (Aftermath). Patrck O'Connell portrayed Edward Hammond in The Brothers.
Director : Raymond Menmuir Cast : Peter Andrews, Allan Cuthbertson, Peter Raymond TX : 14th May 1966 Notes : Richard Harris would write four episodes of The Avengers during its run - Square Root of Evil, Hunt The Man Down,The Winged Avenger and Game. He would co write a fifth episode (The Interrogators) with Brian Clemens. He would later script edit the detective serial Hazell and his play Stepping Out was turned into a film in 1991 starring Julie Walters and Liza Minelli. Harris also provided the film's screenplay. He was also the co-creator alongside Robert Banks Stewart of seventies gumshoe Shoestring and alongside Dennis Spooner was co-creator of Man In A Suitcase.

Jackson is best known for his role as the ill fated Gan in Blake's Seven. He also appeared in Edge of Darkness. John Junkin started his working life as a teacher. Other notable guest roles include Ghost Squad, The Avengers, The Goodies, The Sweeney, Out and more recently The Sins.

The annual featured articles and full page photos about life in the Corps of The Royal Military Police. Anne Lynn had previously guested in episodes of Out Of This World, Ghost Squad and Danger Man. Later credits included Public Eye, The Champions, Special Branch and The Professionals. Barrie Ingham also appeared in episodes of Undermind and Mr Rose. Barrie Ingham played Sejanus in the 1968 ITV production The Caesars. Steve Plytas has many credits in memorable TV shows including Crane, The Avengers, Jason King and Department S.

Russell Hunter is best recalled as Lonely, the right hand man of Callan, but was also Mr Stabs in Ace Of Wands and Uranov in the Doctor Who adventure The Robots of Death. David Burke was most recently seen in the BBC Saturday night crime drama Waking The Dead (Life Sentence). Ewan Hooper had also appeared in the Redcap episode The Patrol.

He would later go on to direct episodes of shows such as Undermind, Upstairs Downstairs, Lord Peter Wimsey and The Professionals. He later became a producer on The Professionals and worked in this capacity and also occasionally as a director on Cats Eyes. Michael Goodliffe (1914-1976) had previously guest starred in The Invisible Man, The Saint and Ghost Squad. His other guest roles included The Avengers (The House That Jack Built), Man In A Suitcase, Jason King and the original series of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). In the series Callan he was the second version of Hunter and portrayed Jack Barraclough in the 1973 series Sam. Goodliffe committed suicide whilst in hospital in 1976. Tony Caunter is probably most famous for his role as Roy Evans in Eastenders. Amongst guest roles in the major cult and classic series of the past forty years his more unusual credits include a stint as Friar Tuck in the 1975 BBC series The Legend of Robin Hood. |
