Publicity : SThe Spies - A new series - developed out of The Mask Of Janus - plunges you into the violent front line of espionage: The secret campaigns of international espionage are not always so different in essence from open warfare. Far back in the base areas there are quiet, comfortable, and well-hidden places where plans are made, where clever men decide strategy. But there is also a front line, and here an accurate pistol can become as important as ingenious planning; here, too, the end product of the strategists' schemes can be a corpse floating face down in a muddy river. The recent Mask Of Janus series dealt largely with the armchair war, the battle of wits. The new series which begins tonight again focuses on the British intelligence network in Amalia, but it will be moving up more often into the forward positions. In the firing line the Janus-mask of deception loses some of its power, so the combatants become - like the title of the new series - simply The Spies. John Gould, who devised The Mask Of Janus, is the author of tonight's opening adventure of The Spies. It is called "If He Runs, I Want You There", and it shows the front-line spy as he almost always is - exposed, mistrusted, and friendless. Richard Cadell, whose record in the field has been marked by certain errors, is called home for "routine security vetting". But is his recall in fact a normal operation? In London there are men whose business is to spy on the spies, and they are taking an interest not only in Cadell, but in his chief, Anthony Kelly. In this story, Dinsdale Landen and Simon Oates as Cadell and Kelly are joined by guest stars Ray Barrett and Catherine Woodville. (Radio Times, December 30, 1965).

Synopsis : Spies don't have friends - only enemies and lovers.

The Spies - Tonight's story involves some highly clandestine arrivals and departures from Amalia: Whom can the spies trust? The short answer is no one at all - but in the world of intelligence it is sometimes essential to take a chance. Cadell, Hastings and Kelly run a dangerous race against Copic for a valuable international prize.

Barely had audiences had time to digest the eleven fifty-minute episodes which comprised The Mask Of Janus, the series returned two weeks later in what was hailed a "spin-off" but was effectively a remodelling of the original series and a change in focus from the "backroom boys" to the "frontline men".

Retitled The Spies, the series became less distinctive than its original counterpart and concerned itself more with Danger Man territory in the cut-and-thrust world of international espionage.

Whilst the series took as its base the fictional European country of Amalia, the programme branched out to Britain and the United States in the pursuit of defecting agents and official secrets. The primary cast was reduced to concentrate on the two primary "spies" from the original series, Richard Cadell (Dinsdale Landen) and Anthony Kelly (Simon Oates), whilst supporting performances from two of the original cast, Hamilton Dyce (as Arthur Letby) and Peter Arne (as the Russian agent, Copic) featured sporadically throughout the fifteen fifty-minute episodes.

The pace of The Spies differed radically from The Mask Of Janus as the scriptwriting became somewhat tighter with a greater emphasis on action and adventure rather than the covert activities of espionage operatives behind the scenes.

Whilst the programme remained a popular fixture in the BBC's line-up, and audiences continued to sustain it, the content of the series was very much stable ITV fare and the majority of the storylines had already featured prominently in the wide variety of action-adventure serials they had produced during the 1960s.

Nevertheless, the series is a rare example of the BBC's dubious flirtation with espionage programmes, which have, in every decade from the 1950s to the present, at least made their presence felt in the shape of one drama serial or another. The programme was never commercially exploited.
