![]() Spawned from the highly-successful Armchair Thriller series (Quiet As A Nun in 1978), Jemima Shore Investigates featured Patricia Hodge (as opposed to Maria Aitken in the pilot serial) in the title role, a television reporter, writer and presenter of Megalith Television's Jemima Shore Investigates programme. A determined woman with an inquiring mind, Jemima would often become embroiled in criminal activities amidst the upper classes, and found that her professional and personal lives very often became intertwined as an investigation ran through its paces. ![]() The series, which ran to thirteen fifty-minute episodes, was highly entertaining and tightly-scripted, yet the premise of an upper-crust television presenter by day turned private investigator by night was a product of its time. Whilst Hodge was strong enough to sustain audience figures in the leading role, her supporting cast often left a great deal to be desired and the programme was occasionally let down by some surprisingly poor performances. ![]() Matched only by the fact that the whodunnit element of the series, upon which a programme of this nature survived, hardly taxed viewers' deductive skills - apart, that is, from the opening two-parter A Splash Of Red, which could have been more appropriately called A Television Full Of Red Herrings. In essence, whilst the programme had the ability to carve out interesting and diverting tales of mystery and dastardly deeds, the element of suspense so keenly mastered during the Armchair Thriller pilot serial failed to translate itself into the series which followed in its wake. Certainly Antonia Fraser's novels featuring Jemima Shore (upon which the series was based) sold well as a result of the Thames series having been transmitted, so at any rate it made the party responsible for the character princely dividends. A notable and rare appearance by Tom Baker in one of the episodes raises the profile of this series slightly, as does contributions in the director's chair from Alan Grint and Brian Farnham. The series was exported worldwide, and was a popular late-evening fixture in Australia. The programme has never been commercially released in any format.
The series was based on characters written and created by Antonia Fraser. The series was produced by Tim Aspinall and story edited by Frances Heasman. The music was composed by Richard Hartley. Text © Matthew Lee, 2005.
